BOOKS

From that first blank page, creating a book is a big responsibility and the consideration must be how it will fare in ten, twenty or more years? With many obstacles to overcome, books can only be an act of love and determination.

STORIES FROM THE WAYSIDE by Reverend Graham Long
Created and designed by Andrew Henderson,196 pages, University Queensland Press

My idea for this book began with no budget, no publisher and a financial risk too great to take. What came about was a transformative project for Wayside and everyone involved on both sides of the camera. A book born from love and launched to much fanfare by the NSW Governor and Premier.

SYNOPSIS

Celebrating the Wayside Chapel in Sydney’s inner city, this illustrated book created and designed by Andrew Henderson honors both the people who work within its walls and the visitors for whom the Wayside is a welcome support system. Compiled before the original chapel was demolished to make way for the new building, this collection of often-surprising images revealing both the emotional and physical territory of the landscape around the historic Wayside. Accompanying the superb photography is a collection of emails—written over a period of five years—that reveal both the light and dark aspects of life on the streets and at the chapel.

DAVID JONES 175 YEARS by Helen O’Neil.
Created and designed by Andrew Henderson, 336 pages, NewSouth Books

Fourteen months out from the 175th anniversary, I pitched a commemorative book to the David Jones CEO and Board approved with my autonomous oversight. A sweeping project that grew later to become a major store event and exhibition. A project that began with bolt-cutters and unfettered access to a forgotten archive full of waiting treasures.
